PHP2Shell: is your WordPress site exposed?

PHP2Shell is a flaw in PHP itself: one request can run code on the server, with no login. The fix is a newer PHP on the server, and no WordPress update installs it.

Passive check: public headers and page source only. No login, no attack traffic, no exploit attempts.

Impact
Remote code execution, no login
Severity
CVSS v4.0 9.2
Fixed upstream
PHP 8.1 and older
No fix from php.net

Two dates for every PHP site

PHP2Shell was fixed upstream on 21 October 2026. From 31 December 2026, PHP 8.2 gets no security fixes at all, so anything found later stays open on 8.2 servers.

Linux distributions and CloudLinux often backport fixes without changing the version number. A server that reports 8.1 may already carry the fix: the check shows what the server advertises, and the upgrade settles it.

The upgrade, end to end

Fixed scope, paid upfront. The live site keeps running while the work happens on a copy.

  1. Backup and staging copy

A full backup of files and database, then a private copy of the site to work on.
  2. PHP 8.3 or 8.4 on the copy

A compatibility scan of plugins and theme, then the upgrade on staging.
  3. Fixes and a visual check

Breakages fixed in code. Key pages compared before and after, screenshot by screenshot.
  4. Go live, then 30 days of warranty

The upgrade moves to the live server. Anything it breaks in the next 30 days is fixed at no charge.

Scope and limits

Included: the PHP upgrade, the code fixes it needs in plugins, theme and custom code, and the hosting settings that go with it. Not included: a theme redesign, new features, or replacing an abandoned plugin with a different product. A server with no panel or SSH access cannot be upgraded by us; the host does it, and we prepare and test the site for it.

Three fixed prices

Paid upfront. The package depends on the size of the site, and the free report recommends one.

PHP2Shell and the upgrade: details

Advertised PHP version and backported fixes

The check reads the PHP version a server advertises in its public headers. Linux distributions and CloudLinux often backport security fixes without changing that number, so an old version string is a reason to look closer and proves nothing on its own. The upgrade removes the doubt: a supported PHP branch with the fix, confirmed on the server.

WordPress updates and PHP2Shell

A WordPress update does not change PHP. The host or the server administrator installs PHP, so PHP2Shell is fixed on the server: a patched PHP build from the host, or an upgrade to a supported branch.

What the free check reads

Only what any browser receives: response headers, the page source and the version tags on public plugin files. No login, no form submissions, no exploit attempts. Each report shows the date and time of its check.

Shared hosting and the PHP version switch

Most shared hosts have a PHP version switch in cPanel, Plesk or their own panel. The switch is one click; the work is what breaks after it: old plugins, theme code, missing PHP extensions. The switch happens on a staging copy first, and the live site moves only after the fixes.

Access needed for the upgrade

Hosting panel or SSH access and a WordPress administrator account; DNS access only where the host requires it. Credentials travel through a one-time secure link and are deleted when the job closes.

Rollback and refund

A full backup is taken before anything changes. If the upgrade breaks the site and the fix is not possible, the site returns to that backup and the fee is refunded. The terms of the PHP upgrade service set out the details.

WooCommerce stores and customer data

Store data stays on the client's server, and the staging copy lives with the same host where possible. When the work touches customer personal data, a data processing agreement is signed before any access is granted.

PHP 8.2 after 31 December 2026

PHP 8.2 receives security fixes from php.net until 31 December 2026. After that date new flaws in 8.2 stay unfixed upstream, which is why the upgrade targets 8.3 or 8.4 and not the latest 8.2 build.
